You know when your workout is so hard all you can do is laugh...a lot? Well I was pretty much smiling and laughing for 60 minutes today while I bathed in my own sweat. I know, I am sweating 60% of the time from Hot Yoga, but this my friends was not a heated class. I will be subbing for Michael later this week and wanted to spend some time with him and his students before I do. He said to me, 'You know how some teachers make you hold poses for a really long time? Well, I hold them longer than that". He actually does.
Michael DeCorte is the founder of Jock Yoga. A Strong Practice. Jock Yoga classes are designed to have a more universal appeal – for the yoga-skeptic, the inflexible, the over-flexible who wish to build strength, women and men who want to tone and strengthen their muscles, jocks/athletes, people who want to strengthen their spirit/ambition/resolve, and just about anyone who is willing to sweat!
That being said, his classes are fantastic. I felt as though I was pushing myself beyond my limit with each pose and each breath. Just when I thought it was our last Chataranga and I pushed myself to find one more in me, we weren't even half way there. Yet, I did all of them. I did the class from beginning to end even though over and over again in my mind I made room for self-doubt, but each time I defeated it. Michael isn't joking when he asks you to hold something for ten. Ten what? I am not sure because they certainly are not seconds. He will, 100%, start from ten 'units of Michael' again if you dare let go of the pose.
I love challenging classes for many reasons, one being that there is little to no space to think about anything else. I definitely was not building a grocery list in my mind, randomly admiring the brilliance of the Cohen brothers or desperately longing for an English Bulldog that I cannot have. I was present, aware of my body, my strength, my will power and my breath. In moments where I longed for some sort of relief, Michael made eye contact and gave the class permission to swear, and I did. It was great. I also love this class because I do, indeed, want to look good in my birthday suit.
Michael teaches Jock Yoga at Equinox, Moksha Uptown and System Fitness. His schedule can be seen here. For those of you in the community who teach Yoga and Group classes, there will be a Jock Yoga Training in October, details here.
I strongly recommend you check this class out ASAP.
